R&D Project Proposal; Deliverable A

R&D Paper Topic from List: 7 - Cooperative work and relevant technological support for project management, such as group systems as implemented on the Internet (wikis, blogs, videoconferencing, shared whiteboards, etc).

Problem Statement:
The great challenge of the distributed organization is getting the best talent applied to the right project in the right place at the right time. Even on critical, high-dollar projects the wear and tear on subject matter experts contributing to project teams from routine required travel is severely taxing (Wang, 2002). Internet social networking utilities are turning into the virtual project management team’s best facilitating resource. The straightforward, low-overhead technology allows participants to collaborate and share technical content utilizing numerous media-rich capabilities (Nooriafshar, & Todhunter, 2004).

Draft Title: Web 2.0 IT Project Management for Fun and Profit

Subtitle: Using the Internet for Virtual Project Management Including Facilitating Cooperative Work and Collaboration Along with a Survey of Relevant Technologies

OUTLINE OF PAPER
1 - Indications that Web Services Can Support and Enhance Project Management
2 - A Survey of Technologies Contributing to Virtual Internet Project Management
3 - The Dynamics and Issues Peculiar to Internet Project Management
4 - A Walkthrough of Managing an IT Project Using Web 2.0

R & D Topic Choice

After a bit of surveying and consideration for utilizing the actual Project Management topic in the corporate world the topic to develop will be:

7 - Cooperative work and relevant technological support for project management, such as group systems as implemented on the Internet (wikis, blogs, videoconferencing, shared whiteboards, etc).

As organizations become more distributed, including utilizing a broadening base of partners/collaborators outside of the home enterprise; the use of internet-based project management and collaboration tools should prove to be valuable. As internet utilities for social networking and media-rich content sharing continue to improve, tailoring and devloping their use for virtual project management teams would appear to be a natural evolution with many benefits.

Topics for R&D Consideration

The following topics interest me and will be considered for further development and research:

What are the differences between the roles of project managers in educational environments versus those in business? Explain using the literature.

Cooperative work and relevant technological support for project management, such as group systems as implemented on the Internet (wikis, blogs, videoconferencing, shared whiteboards, etc).

The usefulness of groupware for managing projects especially in relation to workflow (wikis here too).

Comparison of at least one public domain project management software package that is available on the Internet or WWW with a commercial PC software package such as Microsoft Project.

Develop a wiki for your work environment. Invite your peers to participate. Select a problem for the group to address. Prepare a paper with your results. Provide literature support for the use of wikis in the workplace.

Show how to use XML to plan, control, and report about information systems projects. For example, how can RSS help in managing projects? Show us.

Using UML to report results of project management for information systems projects.

Using virtual teams in managing projects (maybe another wiki application)?
